What Do I Wear to a Virtual Meeting?

Is Your Clothing Communicating The Right Message?
Within a matter of weeks, our everyday work outfits went from blouses, collared shirts and dress pants to sweatpants, sweatshirts and slippers.
Our wardrobe doesn’t tend to matter when we’re working alongside our children and significant others, or alone. Who doesn’t want to be in pajamas all day?
But with Zoom meetings becoming a part of our everyday routines, we still need to dress the part while on camera. We’ve all heard the saying, “Dress for the job you want, not the job you have”. This still rings true even while working from home.
Perception Is Reality
Whether we like it or not, our clients, customers, and peers make judgment calls based on appearances. It is inevitable.
Here’s an example, if a construction crew came to your house in suits and dress shoes, you’d probably be a bit weary. You’d ask yourself, “Why are they dressed like that if they are tearing down the shed?” Or, “Are they going to do a good job if they are dressed in such nice clothes?”
Perception is reality and we don’t want clients, customers, or our peers to question our abilities based on how we present ourselves on camera.
How To Create a Practical Work From Home Uniform
Look we get it, whether you are chasing kids around all day or working alone, you aren’t going to want to wear dress pants.
But you also can’t wear those Marvel pajama pants during a zoom call, because well, we’ve all seen someone get up during a meeting wearing some questionable pants.
Here are some practical tips:

Wear black leggings, joggers, or jeans. Staying neutral is key. Chances are, even if you get up during the meeting, no one will notice your cozy bottoms.

Put on a confidence-building blouse or blazer. Feeling confident changes your posture, how you speak, and your body language.

Add a simple accessory. A watch or a pair of earrings will elevate any look. Plus, adding accessories to our face or hands brings attention to two key nonverbal communication tools.
